A Brief History of Tugu Yogyakarta

Prototype and After the renovations until now (monument of jogja)

A little history about the monument that was once called the Tugu Yogyakarta golong gilig.
When we look at a map of the region of Yogyakarta (DIY) from north (top of Mount Merapi) + 70 km to the south up to Pandan Simo (on the southern coast of Ocean Indonesia) as if we can pull straight line. Imaginary straight line through three important buildings in the city of Yogyakarta, namely:

- Tugu Yogyakarta / Monument golong gilig;
- Sultan's Palace, and
- Stage Krapyak (Cage Menjangan)
The concept of this imaginary straight line created by Panembahan Senopati, a founder of the dynasty of the Kingdom of Mataram king of Yogyakarta (1586-1601)


Yogyakarta Tugu monument called golong gilig, actually has undergone changes in form after the renovation because of collapsed (+3 m) by the earthquake that rocked Yogyakarta on June 10, 1867.

Yogyakarta Tugu (Tugu golong gilig) was built by Prince Mangkubumi (HB I), founder of the Sultanate Ngayogyakarta to commemorate his struggle with the people, kesatupaduan with the people against evil Dutch colonialists. In 1949 Indonesia's independence is recognized by the Dutch. Sultan HB X led the resignation of the Dutch troops and guerrilla forces entry to Yogyakarta. GoI restored and moved back to Jakarta. Era of Sultan HB X is a new chapter golong gilig. In this era of Sultan HB X does not become the commander of the war against the Dutch, but the war against ignorance, backwardness, and poverty with passion golong gilig.

According to the Cultural Council of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the Javanese concept of king was gung binathara. On one side of the king has great power. He is gung binathara, smell dendha nyakrawati. His power like a god. He is the holder of the law and ruling the world. On the other hand he has a large and heavy duty. He must be and act virtuous bring leksana, ambeg paramarta fair. He likes to give and the obligation to consistently carry out what he says, are fair to all classes of the people and the intelligent prioritization that should take precedence. King should be able to apply balanced between the rights and obligations. His rule was based on nobility and fair nature.

Basic philosophy of government is the king of Mataram hamemayu hayuning bawana. Philosophy literally means "make the world beautiful." Ayu not only in the physical sense, but also a significant Rahayu survived physical and spiritual prosperity. Bawana is the universe, so that this philosophy also contains a global sense. Hamengkubuwono title implies:
hamangku (more blessed to give than to receive);
hamengku (maintain and protect the people, hangrengkuh / ngemong, meaningful ambeg paramarta fair, be fair and good at putting that should take precedence.

hamengkoni: leadership by making a role model (Hing ngarsa sung tuladha).
Leaders who have hamangku willing and sincere attitude to serve the community. He is the servant of the people. He is virtuous, that is like giving, especially to the poor and are experiencing distress.

The monument jogja Now


Tugu Jogja slight crack in the middle after a 5.9 earthquake on the Richter scale rocked Yogyakarta on May 27, 2006. But the firm has been addressed until now.
